What Is a Russian Business Visa?
A Russian business visa allows foreign nationals to enter Russia for business purposes — meetings, conferences, negotiations, market research, contract signing, and other commercial activities. Unlike a tourist visa, the business visa can be valid for up to 1 year with multiple entries.
Types of Business Visas
| Type | Validity | Entries | Max Stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Entry | Up to 90 days | 1 | 90 days |
| Double Entry | Up to 90 days | 2 | 90 days total |
| Multiple Entry (90 days) | 90 days | Unlimited | 90 days within period |
| Multiple Entry (6 months) | 6 months | Unlimited | 90 days within 180 days |
| Multiple Entry (1 year) | 1 year | Unlimited | 90 days within 180 days |
Business Visa Invitation
The business visa invitation is fundamentally different from a tourist invitation. It must be issued by a registered Russian company through the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD). The process involves:
- A Russian company submits an application to the local MVD office
- The MVD processes and approves the invitation
- The invitation is sent to the Russian consulate or directly to the applicant
Processing times vary by visa duration:
- Single/Double entry (up to 90 days): 9–12 business days
- Multiple entry (6 months): 12–15 business days
- Multiple entry (1 year): 15–21 business days
Costs
Business visa invitation costs depend on the visa type and processing speed:
- Single/Double entry: from $149
- Multiple entry (6 months): from $249
- Multiple entry (1 year): from $399
These prices are for the invitation only. You'll also need to pay the consular fee at the embassy when submitting your application.
Required Documents
- Valid passport (6+ months validity, 2 blank pages)
- Business visa invitation from MVD
- Completed application form (visa.kdmid.ru)
- Passport photo (3.5×4.5 cm)
- Travel medical insurance (€30,000 minimum, except US citizens)
- Cover letter from your company (recommended)
Business Visa vs Tourist Visa
If you're visiting Russia for a short business trip (under 30 days), you might consider a tourist visa instead — it's cheaper and faster to obtain. However, if you need multiple entries or a longer validity period, the business visa is the better choice.
