History

Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg, Prussia) has a unique history unlike any other Russian city. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1255, it was the capital of East Prussia and home to philosopher Immanuel Kant. After WWII, the city was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed. Today it's Russia's westernmost city — an exclave surrounded by EU countries (Poland and Lithuania), giving it a distinctly European atmosphere with German Gothic architecture alongside Soviet buildings.
