History

Sochi is Russia's largest resort city, stretching 145 km along the Black Sea coast. The area has been inhabited since antiquity, but the modern city was founded in 1838 as a Russian military fort. It became the USSR's premier vacation destination under Stalin, who built his personal dacha here. The 2014 Winter Olympics transformed Sochi into a world-class resort with modern infrastructure, combining subtropical beaches with alpine ski slopes just 40 km apart.
