History

Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, is one of Russia's oldest cities, founded over 1,000 years ago. It uniquely blends Orthodox Christian and Islamic cultures, with mosques and churches standing side by side. Conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552, it became a key city of the Russian Empire. Today Kazan is a thriving metropolis known as Russia's 'Third Capital' — a UNESCO City of Design and host of the 2013 Universiade and 2018 FIFA World Cup matches.
