History

Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great as Russia's 'Window to Europe.' Built on marshland at the mouth of the Neva River, it served as the capital of the Russian Empire for over 200 years (1712โ€“1918). The city survived the devastating 872-day Siege of Leningrad during WWII. Today it is Russia's cultural capital, home to the Hermitage, the Mariinsky Theatre, and one of the most beautiful historic city centers in the world โ€” entirely a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
