Russian Customs Declaration

A customs declaration form must be filled out when entering or leaving Russia if you carry more than $10,000 in cash, valuable items, or restricted goods. Available at border checkpoints.

Detailed Explanation

The Russian customs declaration is an official form that travelers must complete when carrying certain items across the Russian border. It is separate from the migration card and visa documents.

When you MUST fill out a customs declaration:

  • Carrying more than $10,000 USD (or equivalent) in cash or traveler's checks
  • Bringing valuable items that you plan to take back (expensive electronics, jewelry, musical instruments)
  • Carrying restricted items (medications, weapons, cultural artifacts)
  • Importing/exporting goods for commercial purposes

When you DON'T need a customs declaration:

  • Standard tourist with personal belongings under the duty-free allowance
  • Carrying less than $10,000 in cash
  • No restricted or high-value items

The customs declaration form:

  • Available in Russian and English at all border checkpoints
  • Must be filled out in duplicate (one copy stays with customs, one you keep)
  • KEEP YOUR COPY — you'll need it when leaving Russia to prove what you brought in
  • Present it at the red channel ("goods to declare") at customs

Duty-free allowances for personal items:

  • Up to 50 kg and €10,000 in value for air travelers
  • Up to 25 kg and €500 in value for land border crossings
  • Alcohol: up to 3 liters per person (age 18+)
  • Tobacco: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars

Frequently Asked Questions

Only if you're carrying more than $10,000 in cash, valuable items you plan to take back, or restricted goods. Most tourists with standard luggage can use the green channel (nothing to declare).

What happens if I don't declare cash over $10,000?

Failure to declare cash exceeding $10,000 can result in confiscation of the undeclared amount and criminal charges. Always declare if you're near or over the limit.
