When you MUST fill out a customs declaration:

• •Carrying more than $10,000 USD (or equivalent) in cash or traveler's checks
• •Bringing valuable items that you plan to take back (expensive electronics, jewelry, musical instruments)
• •Carrying restricted items (medications, weapons, cultural artifacts)
• •Importing/exporting goods for commercial purposes

When you DON'T need a customs declaration:

• •Standard tourist with personal belongings under the duty-free allowance
• •Carrying less than $10,000 in cash
• •No restricted or high-value items

The customs declaration form:

• •Available in Russian and English at all border checkpoints
• •Must be filled out in duplicate (one copy stays with customs, one you keep)
• •KEEP YOUR COPY — you'll need it when leaving Russia to prove what you brought in
• •Present it at the red channel ("goods to declare") at customs

Duty-free allowances for personal items:

• •Up to 50 kg and €10,000 in value for air travelers
• •Up to 25 kg and €500 in value for land border crossings
• •Alcohol: up to 3 liters per person (age 18+)
• •Tobacco: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars
