Russian Double Entry Visa — When You Need It & How to Get One

A double-entry Russian visa allows the holder to enter Russia twice during the visa validity period. This is useful for travelers who plan to visit a neighboring country (such as Mongolia, Finland, Estonia, or other Baltic states) during their trip and then return to Russia.

How double-entry works: 1. First entry: Enter Russia (visa becomes active) 2. Exit: Leave Russia to visit another country 3. Second entry: Re-enter Russia 4. Final exit: Leave Russia (visa expires)

You CANNOT enter a third time — after the second entry and exit, the visa is used up.

When you need a double-entry visa:

•Trans-Siberian Railway trips that pass through Mongolia or China
•Visiting Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) during a Russia trip
•Business travelers visiting multiple CIS countries
•Cruise ships that stop in multiple countries including Russia

Double-entry tourist visa:

•Duration: Up to 30 days total (both entries combined)
•Requires: Double-entry visa invitation
•Availability: Limited — not all consulates issue them readily
•The invitation must specifically state "double entry"

Double-entry business visa:

•More common and easier to obtain
•Duration: 1–3 months typically
•Subject to the same 90/180-day rule for multi-entry visas

Important: A double-entry visa is NOT the same as a multiple-entry visa. Multiple entry allows unlimited entries; double entry allows exactly two.
