One of the most common confusions among first-time travelers to Russia is the difference between a visa invitation and the visa itself. They are two completely separate documents with different purposes.

VISA INVITATION (what we provide):

  • What it is: A document from a Russian organization supporting your visa application
  • Who issues it: Licensed Russian tour operator or company
  • Purpose: Required by the consulate to process your visa application
  • Format: PDF document sent by email
  • Cost: $18–$399 depending on type
  • Processing: 5 minutes to 21 days depending on type
  • Where to get it: Online from visa invitation services like GetRussianVisa.com

VISA (what the consulate issues):

  • What it is: An official entry permit (sticker in your passport)
  • Who issues it: Russian embassy or consulate in your country
  • Purpose: Allows you to enter Russia
  • Format: Sticker/stamp placed in your passport
  • Cost: Consular fee ($40–$160)
  • Processing: 5–10 business days (standard)
  • Where to get it: At your local Russian consulate or through VFS Global

The process in order: 1. Get visa invitation (from us) → 2. Fill application form → 3. Submit to consulate → 4. Receive visa in passport → 5. Travel to Russia

Think of it like this:

  • The invitation is like a "recommendation letter" that tells the consulate someone in Russia is expecting you
  • The visa is the actual "permission stamp" that lets you cross the border

You CANNOT enter Russia with just an invitation — you need the actual visa in your passport. You CANNOT get the visa without first having the invitation (except for e-visa).

Häufig Gestellte Fragen

Is a visa invitation the same as a visa?

No. A visa invitation is a document you need to APPLY for a visa at the consulate. The visa itself is the stamp/sticker placed in your passport by the consulate that allows you to enter Russia.

Can I enter Russia with just a visa invitation?

No. The invitation is only for the application process. You need the actual visa (sticker in passport) issued by a Russian consulate to enter Russia.

Do I need both an invitation AND a visa?

Yes (for tourist and business visas). First get the invitation, then use it to apply for the visa at the consulate. The only exception is the e-visa, which requires neither an invitation nor a consulate visit.
