Visa Registration (Migration Registration)

The process of registering a foreign visitor's presence in Russia within 7 business days of arrival. Usually done by the hotel or hosting organization.

Ayrıntılı Açıklama

Visa registration (officially called "migration registration" or "notification of arrival") is the legal requirement for all foreign visitors to register their location in Russia within 7 business days of arrival. This is NOT the same as the visa itself — it's an additional step after you've already entered the country.

How registration works: 1. You arrive in Russia and pass through border control 2. Within 7 business days, your "host" must register you 3. The host submits a notification to the local MVD migration office 4. You receive a tear-off portion (отрывная часть) as proof of registration 5. You must keep this document throughout your stay

  • Hotels — automatically register you at check-in (most common)
  • Airbnb/apartment hosts — should register you but often don't
  • Russian friends/relatives — can register you at their address
  • Companies — for business visa holders
  • Hostels and guesthouses — register you like hotels

Important rules:

  • The 7-day deadline counts BUSINESS days (not calendar days)
  • If you move cities, you need new registration in each city
  • Hotels handle this automatically — you just need your passport and migration card
  • If staying in a private apartment, the landlord must register you at the post office
  • Failure to register can result in fines (2,000–5,000 RUB) or deportation for repeat offenses
  • Weekend days and public holidays don't count toward the 7-day limit

The registration document (tear-off portion) should be kept with your passport at all times, as police may ask to see it during document checks.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Do hotels in Russia automatically register foreign guests?

Yes. All hotels, hostels, and guesthouses in Russia are legally required to register foreign guests and will do so automatically at check-in. You just need to provide your passport and migration card.

What if I'm staying in an Airbnb in Russia?

The apartment owner/landlord is responsible for registering you at the local post office or MVD office. Many private hosts don't do this, which technically puts you at risk of a fine.

Can I be fined for not registering in Russia?

Yes. The fine for failing to register is 2,000–5,000 rubles. Repeated violations can lead to deportation and entry bans.
