Visa Validity vs. Duration of Stay

The period during which a visa can be used for entry (validity) versus the maximum number of days allowed inside Russia (duration of stay). These are different concepts.

Detailed Explanation

Understanding the difference between visa validity and duration of stay is crucial for Russian visa holders:

VISA VALIDITY = The date range during which you can enter Russia DURATION OF STAY = The maximum number of days you can spend inside Russia

For tourist visas:

  • Validity: Matches exact dates on your invitation (e.g., June 1–30)
  • Duration of stay: Up to 30 days
  • You MUST enter on or after the start date and leave by the end date
  • There is NO flexibility — even one day late entering means the visa is wasted

For business visas (multi-entry):

  • Validity: 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year from issue date
  • Duration of stay: Maximum 90 days in any 180-day period
  • You can enter and exit multiple times within the validity period
  • But total days inside Russia cannot exceed 90 in any rolling 180-day window

For e-visas:

  • Validity: 60 days from issue date
  • Duration of stay: 16 days maximum
  • Single entry only — once you leave, the visa expires

Common mistakes: 1. Thinking you can enter Russia any time within a tourist visa's validity (you must enter on the exact start date or later, but the total stay cannot exceed the dates) 2. Overstaying on a multi-entry business visa (the 90/180 rule is strictly enforced) 3. Confusing visa validity with allowed stay duration

Overstaying consequences:

  • Fine of 2,000–7,000 RUB
  • Possible detention
  • Entry ban (3–10 years depending on duration of overstay)
  • Deportation at own expense

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter Russia before my visa start date?

No. You cannot enter Russia before the start date on your visa. If you arrive early, you will be denied boarding or turned away at the border.

What happens if I overstay my Russian visa?

Overstaying results in fines (2,000–7,000 RUB), possible detention, and entry bans of 3–10 years. Always leave before your visa expires.
