Minimum Requirements for Russian Visa Insurance
The Russian consulate has strict requirements for the travel insurance policy you submit with your visa application. If your policy does not meet these criteria, your application will be rejected.
- Minimum Coverage Amount: The policy must provide at least €30,000 (or equivalent in your local currency) in medical coverage.
- Validity Period: The insurance must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Russia. The dates on the policy must match or exceed the dates on your visa application.
- Geographical Coverage: The policy must explicitly state that it is valid in the "Russian Federation" or "Worldwide".
- Required Details: The certificate must show your full name (matching your passport), the policy number, and the insurer's stamp and signature.
What Must Be Covered?
Your travel insurance policy must specifically cover the following events during your stay in the Russian Federation:
Medical Expenses
Coverage for sudden illness, accidents, hospitalization, and emergency medical treatment while in Russia.
Emergency Evacuation
Coverage for emergency medical transportation to a suitable medical facility or back to your home country.
Repatriation
Coverage for the repatriation of remains in the unfortunate event of death during the trip.
24/7 Assistance
Access to a 24-hour emergency assistance hotline provided by the insurance company.
E-Visa Insurance Requirements
If you are applying for a Russian E-Visa, the insurance requirements are exactly the same as for a regular visa. You must have a valid medical insurance policy covering the entire period of your stay in the Russian Federation.
Even though the E-Visa application is entirely online, you may be asked to present your printed insurance certificate to border control officers upon arrival in Russia. Failure to present a valid insurance policy can result in denied entry.
How to Submit Your Insurance Document
When applying for a traditional paper visa at a consulate or visa center, you must include a printed copy of your insurance certificate with your application package.
Important Tips for Submission:
- Print the certificate clearly on standard A4 or Letter sized paper.
- Ensure all details (name, dates, coverage amount) are legible.
- If your policy is in a language other than English or Russian, you may need to provide a certified translation.
- Keep a digital copy on your phone and a spare printed copy with you when traveling.
