Understanding the Work Visa Process
Unlike tourist or business visas where you can purchase an invitation from an agency, a work visa requires a genuine employment contract with a Russian company. The process is highly regulated to protect the domestic labor market.
Standard Work Visa
- Requires employer to obtain a quota
- Processing takes 3-6 months
- Initially issued for 90 days, then extended to 1 year
- Requires Russian language, history, and law exams
HQS Work Visa
- For Highly Qualified Specialists (min. salary 167,000 RUB/month)
- Processing takes only 2-3 weeks
- Issued for up to 3 years immediately
- Exempt from language and history exams
The Employer's Role
Your future employer in Russia is responsible for almost the entire invitation process. You cannot initiate this process yourself.

Warning: If an agency offers to sell you a work visa invitation without a real job, it is likely a scam or illegal scheme. Working in Russia without a valid permit tied to your actual employer can lead to deportation. If you only need to attend meetings, apply for a Business Visa instead.
