History

Vladivostok, founded in 1860, is Russia's largest port on the Pacific Ocean and the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway — 9,288 km from Moscow. Its name means 'Ruler of the East.' During the Soviet era, it was a closed military city. Since 1992, it has opened to the world, hosting the APEC Summit in 2012 and becoming a free port zone. The city's dramatic hillside setting overlooking the Golden Horn Bay draws comparisons to San Francisco.
