History

Yekaterinburg, Russia's fourth-largest city, was founded in 1723 by Peter the Great as an industrial center in the Ural Mountains โ€” the geographical border between Europe and Asia. It's known for two dramatic historical events: the execution of the last Tsar Nicholas II and his family in 1918, and Boris Yeltsin's political rise. Today it's a major cultural and economic hub, hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup and bidding for Expo 2025.
